Christmas Ornament

After an absence this fall from Kathy Summer's watercolor class, I rejoined my fellow artist friends for a Christmas celebration and we made these old fashioned accordion fold Christmas ornaments. It was a fun project, we shared Christmas cheer (the "recipe") and discussed our current painting projects.
Merry Christmas and many blessings and joy in the New Year!

Bronze Bust of Martin Luther sculpted by Carol Smith

This amazing bronze bust was sculpted by my friend and fine artist, Carol Smith. I had the pleasure of accompanying Carol to the bronze foundry in Bastrop, Texas where I enjoyed a tour of the foundry. After seeing the process of artist's clay sculpture to wax to bronze, Carol and I got to observe the patina artisan putting the gorgeous finishing patina on Martin. He is mounted on a black granite base. This is Carol's second bronze sculpture, see her bust of John Calvin that was posted on my blog on December 1, 2012.

Merit Award Winner at Pearls Before Swine Art Show

Palmetto Sky won a Merit Award at the Pearls Before Swine Art Show last night!
This watercolor is done on Yupo paper - a synthetic, plastic type paper which presents its own challenges for painting.
The palmetto tree was the subject of a photograph that I took in South Carolina and it was fun painting it from this perspective.
It was a PIG -TASTIC fun time in downtown Elgin!
The show will be open today and Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm in downtown Elgin at the corner of 2nd and Main Street - 201 N Main Street.
See the Elgin Arts Association website for further details -

REFLECTIONS OF CLOUDS

This beautiful poem was written by my artistic friend, Becky Kane.
She is a sensitive and appreciative artist, full of kindness and she has a big heart.

Reflections of Clouds
For Vicki
By Becky Kane

Picture this:
"Nobody could paint those clouds!"
"Vicki could."

And so she did. She captured the clouds and gifted me the painting.

In my healing restful moments,
I sit in my most comfortable chair
Gazing at the subtle, deep and rich
Clouds on my wall - and think of you...
I send you healing restfulness!

On my walks I am filled with joy by
The colors, shapes and movements
Of sunrise and sunset clouds...
I think of you and
I wish you joy.

Air, Stone and Wood -
Just add moisture and they show us
Faces, people, creatures and other things
(Of our imagination? Of spirits that have touched them?)
I feel creative delight...and think of you.

A feeling of ease suffuses a cloudless, blue-sky day.
I notice the absence of clouds...
And think of you...and wish you ease.

Study of Clouds

We have had beautiful clouds lately...some pouring out a bit of much needed rain on us in Central Texas even. The clouds hold so much color and shadow; so many shapes that change quickly. And the hidden sun often adds very rich color to the sky and clouds as well.
This watercolor is on Arches 140# paper and was done on dry paper with stiff hog bristle brushes - I usually paint on wet paper and use softer watercolor brushes so this was an experiment.
This cloud painting is for my Elgin artist/poet friend, Becky, who loves clouds!

People's Choice Award Winner at Georgetown Library WWG show!

Turtle Rock is the winner of the People's Choice Award at the Georgetown Library Waterloo Watercolor Group show! This small and intimate painting is on Arches 140 paper and was based on a photograph that I took this spring at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
This turtle lounges on a rock in the entry pond area and seems to enjoy seeing all the wildflower lovers come and go. I originally did a pastel of this same photo which is posted on April 13, 2013.

Paintings at new ACC Elgin Campus!

This selection of my watercolors are hanging at the new Elgin ACC Campus on Hwy 290 in Elgin, Texas!
It is a beautiful campus and facility! ACC has asked Elgin artists to hang their work in the public areas of the new campus. Go by and check them out! Also my Elgin artist friend, Elizabeth Sullivan has her fabulous watercolors hanging there as well.

Variety of little watercolors

Here is a little collection of watercolors that I have worked on in the past year, just haven't posted them. Two different crows, a set of pigs, a lively pen & ink & watercolor rooster, and sunflowers.

Dusk in Red River

This watercolor on Arches 140 paper captures the beautiful dusk of late afternoon in Red River, NM. We visited this past February and this was the scene behind our condo. We looked out over Red River and the mountain loomed up behind it. The gorgeous dusky light and light snow gave the scene a purple haze.

Landscape - Alaska Inspired!

Watercolor on Arches 140 paper. After viewing photographs that Kathy Summers took on her trip to Alaska, I was inspired to paint this dramatic landscape. The dusky, rich colors and high drama that Kathy captured in her photos are reflected in this painting.

Unfinished Owl

Watercolor on Arches 140 paper. Work in progress. This is from a photograph that I took at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center this spring. This nesting owl is raising a set of  owlets on this ledge for the second year in a row! Rough hill country stone ledge and a cactus  growing right there on the ledge which offers some cover for the owl.

Unfinished Capitol Skyline

Watercolor on Arches 140 paper. This is still a work in progress of an interesting sky and the capitol building in Austin - and I will add other downtown silhouettes most probably.

"For the Love of Books" Art Show - Georgetown Library

Please come to see the Waterloo Watercolor Group's paintings at
"For the Love of Books" Art Show
 at the
 Georgetown Library August 4 - August 30
Open for viewing during the library's normal hours.
Join us for the Opening Reception on Sunday afternoon, August 4th, 2013
from 2-4 pm
WWG artists have drawn inspiration from books for the paintings they have created.

Above are my two paintings displayed in the art show.
"Turtle Rock" was inspired by the wonderful Newberry award winning book Turtle in Paradise. My painting was based on a photograph that I took at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center of the turtles that bask in the sun on rocks in the pond at the entrance - and the Wildflower Center pond certainly is a Turtle Paradise!
"Meadow Bunny" was inspired by the special children's book The Velveteen Rabbit and was based on a photo that I took in the wildflower meadow in my front yard this spring. We have cottontails roaming through the wildflowers and munching on the cool grass. This was taken in the early morning bright light, everything was dewy, fresh and very green.

Unfinished - Red River, NM at dusk

This watercolor on Arches 140 paper is from a photograph that I took this past February 2013 behind our condo while skiing in Red River. It was dusk, very cold, light snow. Although the evergreens were deep, deep green, in the late afternoon light everything took on a purple-ish haze. Still need to work some more on this one.

Unfinished - wet, loose watercolor scene

After watching a painting video at Kathy Summers' group, we painted. This is a very wet, loose landscape attempt on Arches 140# paper. It was a little too wet, out of control and I used a wide, soft Hake brush. I am going to fine tune it and see if it needs to go to the scrap pile!

Rain on Mt Baldy, Garner State Park, Texas

This watercolor was painted on Arches 140 paper and was previously posted on May 11, 2013 in progress. We went camping at Garner State Park over Memorial Day weekend and it poured down raining some of the time, leaving Mt Baldy in a dreamy, cloudy, rain-washed state. Be sure to hike to the top of Mt Baldy when you go to Garner and enjoy the tradition of adding a little rock to the pile of rocks on the very top of Mt Baldy that all successful hikers toss their stone onto.  And enjoy the unbelievable 360* view of the gorgeous Texas ranch country surrounding that area that the Rio Frio winds beautifully through.

Lakeview

This watercolor painting is on Arches 140 paper. I started out painting a really vibrant sky then added in the rest, slowly but surely. Kathy Summers, my wonderful weekly watercolor teacher, gave me great help in planning this painting. In class, we had watched a video of a Scottish watercolor painter who had a great "credit card" scraping technique for rocks - and I was pleased with the way they turned out. You can view an earlier unfinished version of this same painting posted on May 11, 2013.

Pastel Portrait Workshop Creations

I attended a weekend pastel portrait workshop this past Saturday and Sunday  at Laguna Gloria Art School taught by Austin pastel and oil portrait artist, Eve Larson. We worked on Canson MiTeintes paper in khaki & grey shades with soft pastels. We had 3 different live models who were very different in face shapes and hair & skin coloration. On the left is Candice, blondish and fair with casts of red to her skin from reflected light from her red top.. Center is Ashley, dark brunette and peachy complexion with greenish reflected light from her top and the bright green trees outside. On the right is Dixie with dark very curly hair with auburn highlights and rosy reflections in her skin tones. Eve is a great teacher and gave us wonderful demos of each model to start off with, explaining why she was doing what she was doing, special instruction on capturing and spacing for features. Then we tackled the models and were able to get good one on one feedback from Eve. The spacing & feature work will be very helpful for improving my portraits in the future. Very worthwhile class and Eve is a wonderful instructor.

Turtle Rock

Here is a watercolor of a turtle similar to the view that I did in pastel and posted on April 13, 2013. These colorful turtles are in the pond at the entry to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.  His rock is partially submerged in the greenish water which highlights his greenish hues. This was done on Arches paper.

Meadow Bunny

This watercolor is from a photo that I took early in  the morning last week of a cute  little bunny that had hopped through my yard. The bunny was sitting up surveying his little kingdom of wildflowers and grasses. It was bright, spring-like, and dewy outdoors.

Abstract Sunset

Here is an abstract sunset in watercolor on Arches 140 paper. Painted very wet. I like the way the colors bloomed and blended. I used a very large Hake brush for the entire painting.

Landscape Sketching at Wildflower Center

Here are some of my sketches from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center workshop taught by Margie Crisp this past Saturday. The upper sketches are the thumbnails that we developed in pencil outdoors of architectural elements, flowers, cacti. Then we developed a thumbnail into a larger format. I chose my agave and the lower left is a charcoal sketch on a very large 18 x 24 sheet (with a HUGE block of charcoal- 4" x 4" block), then ink pen, the green one is in oil pastel, the dark one on the same page is vine charcoal then the larger one on the bottom right is on a large sheet done with India ink and a very large Chinese paintbrush. It was really an informative class, Margie went over composition, perspective,  other design elements, techniques. Margie stressed that drawing is the crucial component to any other painting - good drawing makes a good watercolor, pastel, etc. And one seemingly obvious key to successful sketching that Margie stressed is to be comfortable outside - good chair, sunscreen, water, sunhat, etc. Fun class, this was the last of the 3 workshops at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
I am going to take a sketchbook around and try to make myself sketch, sketch, sketch. I need to improve my drawing skills and develop confidence in them. It is much easier to gather information with thumbnails and notes to supplement photographs then use that info  to develop finished paintings in the studio.

Watercolor Landscapes

Pictures in Bottom Section -
Bottom Left: Mount Baldy, Garner State Park, Rio Frio, Texas
Upper Middle: Bold Sky
Bottom Right: Dynamic Sky, Good Rocks
Just experimenting with various techniques we are learning in Kathy Summer's watercolor class...skies/clouds are fun to do and we have had some really great ones in Texas lately.

Botanical Illustration in Pencil & Watercolor

I took a botanical illustration class from Austin artist Marjorie Moore at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center today.  We used H and B graphite pencils in different hardnesses and experimented with laying down harder lead to be a base for the softer leads. After drawing from live specimens, we added in color with waxy colored pencils and watercolor pencils. It was a good day and Marjorie has a wonderful collection of botanical illustration books that she shared with us-some very old, gave a short history on botanical illustration and a good bibliography handout for future research. It really helped our observation skills to develop by observing these small botanical specimens and noticing very small differences as we attempted to render them realistically.

Watercolor in progress

Here is a watercolor landscape in progress...in Kathy Summer's watercolor class, we are working on painting dynamic skies. I am really pleased with this sky...I like the back-lighting behind the clouds. I am painting on Arches 140# paper. The sky was painted very wet and I used tissue to take some paint back off. I will put another wash or two of purple over the distant mountains, work on the trees on  the split of land to the left and work in another split of land on the right with a rocky low shoreline. Then after all that, I will consider what else needs to be done to the water.

New Sculpture in Progress by Carol Smith

Here is artist Carol Smith's latest sculpture of Martin Luther. Take a look at a previous post on Dec 1, 2012 to see Carol's cast bronze completed sculpture of John Calvin which was her very first sculpture. Carol will start work on Luther's clothing and robes and hair around the back of the hat next. Really a good likeness  (Carol is using a drawing done by Luther's friend as a reference for her sculpture) and the finished sculpture should look as great as Calvin does!

Lady Bird Wildflower Center Watercolor Class with artist Sue Kemp

I attended the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center "Go Native U" workshop that UT Informal Classes offered today. Taught by Austin artist and Waterloo Watercolor Group member Sue Kemp. Sue had her wonderful painting of bluebonnets selected several years ago as the logo for that year for the Wildflower Center - it is hanging in the gift shop at the Wildflower Center on the wall behind the counter.
Here are my three paintings of the wildflowers Indian blanket, white poppy, and our state flower, the Texas bluebonnet. Sue is a great teacher, helped us achieve very subtle and realistic effects to capture wildflowers.
The Wildflower Center is magnificent right now - go down soon before it gets too hot and check it out. They have new walking trails there too.

Turtle Resting on a Rock

This is my pastel that I painted at the Elgin Studio Art Tour that I participated in today. I was at Elizabeth Sullivan's studio in Elgin with Elizabeth and Darcy Schneider. We had lots of visitors from Elgin, many surrounding towns and even from Houston. It was a gorgeous day, cool, slight breeze, and we had lots of fun meeting new people, visiting with friends and neighbors, showing our art, and Darcy  painted a watercolor and I worked on this pastel of a turtle. I  photographed him on a pretty rock in a pond at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center on a recent visit there that Robert and I made to take in the gorgeous wildflowers that we have enjoyed this spring in Central Texas.

2013 Waterloo Watercolor Group Spring Exhibition

Tomorrow I am taking Texas Redbud and Palmetto Sky to the jury for the Spring 2013 Waterloo Watercolor Group Exhibition. Palmetto Sky is painted on Yupo, synthetic paper, and Texas Redbud is on Arches paper.  Frank Eber, watercolor artist, will be doing a demo on Sunday afternoon then a 4 day workshop this coming week for Waterloo and will be on the jury for the paintings to be selected for the Spring Exhibit.
I am really looking forward to Frank Eber's demo and I am sorry not to be able to attend his workshop as well. He paints loose and  atmospheric watercolors.

Watercolor Study with Limited Palette

Here are two studies on Arches paper using a limited palette of Ultramarine Blue, Quinacridone Gold and Quinacridone Burnt Orange. Both make use of glazes and mixing the color on the paper through glazes rather than mixing color on the palette. The painting on the left uses a softer color palette with more emphasis on shadows and the painting on the right uses more contrast, brighter colors. Interesting to see such big differences with the same 3 colors used. I am trying to be more patient with putting time and effort into doing these studies as I always learn so much from them but I am impatient with working on studies that never seem like "finished" art.

Texas Red Bud

We have a gorgeous red bud tree at our house and it is bursting with beautiful  blooms and buzzing with bees. A red bud tree is interesting in form in that the blooms seem very randomly attached to the branches and the ends of the branch stick out beyond the clusters of blossoms. The clusters also don't have a uniform number of flowers in each cluster. The soft colors and branches seem very oriental in form.

Seahorse in the Deep Deep Sea

This bright little seahorse is in watercolor with salt on the background for texture, watercolor pencils and pen & ink on the body. I did this little exercise with Deb Richardson at
Jerry's Artarama last night.
Salt is a great technique for showing texture, motion, foam,  snow in various ways. It certainly captures a nice fluidness for water.

Palmetto Sky...finished!

Here is the Palmetto Sky watercolor  on yupo paper,  finished!
I made the sky a bit more intense highlighted branches, tried to get the feel of being under a palmetto umbrella.

Palmetto Sky

Watercolor on yupo paper...yupo is a non-absorbent, synthetic paper that is similar to painting on hot press paper- like painting on a piece of plastic. The paint rolls up and moves around and you can't do much with washes as a wet coat of paint moves the dry coat of paint under it around on the paper. It does give interesting effects though. This is from a photograph looking up a tree with the beautiful sky peeking through ...looking like a natural umbrella.
I have not quite completed painting yet, still need to work on the sky and making the fronds seem "attached" to the branches better in some spots.

Apache Pass, north of Rockdale on the North San Gabriel River

This is an historic area where the Apaches lived in Texas on the North San Gabriel River and used this river crossing. The large flat rock was a very interesting feature in the super reflective water which was very clear although the river was low.
I was more pleased with this effort than the other two. Again mounted wallis paper and Sennelier & Rembrandt pastels with a watercolor underpainting. The difficulty that I encountered in my paintings is that I did the underpaintings in the morning light then came back and started on the pastel work in the early afternoon and the light had changed making it very difficult to paint on location - so, lesson learned there.
And plein air painting is a challenge for me - about 40* and very windy in the morning then about 73*, still windy and buggy in the afternoon. Not terribly pleasant painting to me but others in our group just loved it!

The Good, the Bad and.....the Ugly

Ok, remember I promised to put in the good, the bad and the ugly and here it is. This is also from the Rockdale Pastel Workshop. The watercolor underpainting started out ok, but not dark and rich enough,  there was really nice distant light on the green rise at the rear but  I just couldn't do anything with all the weedy grasses that I saw. It just didn't work.
So the great thing about wallis paper is that I can just wash this mess off and will have a light underpainting image left on the paper and use it again.

2013 Pastel Workshop in Rockdale with Rita Kirkman

Here is Mama Agata's Terrace in Ravelo, Italy again...in pastel this time. I still have more pastel work to do on this painting.
In Rita Kirkman's workshop, we did underpaintings with watercolor then used pastel over that base. I need to get darker with my underpaintings then add details in pastel and let more of the watercolor underpainting show through. This was a little difficult  for me, pastels work so much differently than watercolor. And Rita's preferred technique is not in as smooth a base as I usually work - she does very little pastel smoothing but applies blips of color with lots of texture.
This painting was done on mounted wallis paper with Sennelier and Rembrandt pastels.
I do like my tree!

Brandy & Grant - Sepia Portrait drawn at San Antonio Rodeo

Here is a fun quick sepia portrait by pastel artist, Rita Kirkman from New Braunfels, Texas. Rita draws portraits at the San Antonio Rodeo yearly and we caught her there this past Saturday and she captured our  beautiful daughter in law, Brandy, and our handsome older son, Grant, so well.
This coming weekend I am attending a pastel workshop put on by Rita Kirkman in Rockdale, Texas. This will be the 3rd workshop of Rita's that I have attended and she is a great teacher. This workshop focuses on under-painting in watercolor/oil  for the pastel painting. Never done that before so I am really looking forward to this workshop, I always learn so much from Rita. You can check out Rita's work and get more information on her workshops at  http://ritakirkman.com/.

Scott - an 80's kinda guy!

Here is a watercolor on Arches cold press paper of my brother, Scott, who turned a nifty fifty this month! This funky shot - his high school senior picture - shows Scott's awesomely curly black hair and his amazing oversized, very 1980's glasses. The painting is framed in a simple matte black frame. This is a painting based on the invitation to his 50th birthday party hosted by his sweet wife, Susan. Happy Birthday Scott!!!

Sweet 16

Here is a pastel of a young friend of mine painted as a present for her 16th birthday. This soft pastel is done on white Wallis sanded pastel paper mounted on foam board. I framed it in a simple white wood frame,  no matting.

Another watercolor weaving

**This weaving has a new home with a young art lover in Pflugerville - hope she enjoys it!
Another watercolor weaving, this one also painted on index paper. This  painting had as  its base a linear rainbow of yellow, red and orange. Then the woven portion was splattered on in the same colors over a linear pattern. Again interesting to see what patterns result and dominate. The colors are a bit more vivid than they photographed.
